Dear Harp "Aficionados"

Greetings!

Here is information on a new 4-day HarpWorkshop that was offered at beautiful Shawnigan Lake on Vancouver Island (½ hr drive north of Victoria, B.C.) from Monday, July 16 - Thursday, July 19, 2001.  The workshop was part of a new Summer School program for the Celtic Performing Arts, initiated by the Pacific Institute of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts.  I really enjoyed being the new Teacher/Facilitator for this harp workshop and hope to see some of you there next year!

Intermediate Folk Harp (Full-time Program) involved approximately 5 hours of instruction/facilitation per day, plus time to relax, mingle, practice, eat… and just enjoy the many amenities and beauties of the Shawnigan Lake area. To view the campus and its facilities or more about the Pacific Institute of Celtic and Performing Arts, see www.celticperformingarts.com.

Full-time students lived in or out. Shawnigan Lake School facilities which are modern and attractive with just two persons per dorm room (family facilities by arrangement).  Residence students payed Can$225. (US$180.) for tuition plus $53.50 ($38.80) per night for full room and board.  Day students payed $249 ($163.) for tuition and that included a full lunch provided each day in the Shawnigan Lake School Dining Room.

Next year I will be teaching one Introductory Harp (Part-time Program) class each day and Intermediate students are welcome to join this class as Mentors/Demonstrators to those trying the harp for the first time.  As an alternative they can elect to take other options in the Performing Arts Program being offered during the week.

Evening activities are being planned as well.  There will be at least one harp circle, a Ceili(dh), as well as a more formal evening concert.

ALISON VARDY

(Harp Program

Teacher & Facilitator)

Alison is rapidly establishing a reputation for excellence in the Pacific Northwest, as a harp performer, teacher and recording artist, since returning to Canada from New Zealand in 1998

She has produced two popular CDs: Apasionada (2000) and Harping On (NZ: 1997).  Both recordings showcase her flare for original composition on solo harp, as well as her rhythmic arrangements of traditional music from diverse cultures.

Alison performs extensively on both Celtic and Paraguayan harp  and is passionate about rhythm, syncopation and improvisation.  Her concerts and workshops are a fascinating exploration of the many voices of the harp.

For Alison, teaching is "an opportunity to provide and share support, nurture motivation and set achievable goals for becoming a better musician...and person.  Having fun is an important part of the motivation!"  With a classical piano background she teaches both from written music and by ear, always with a clear understanding of the structure of music theory.

Alison lives in Sidney on Vancouver Island with her husband Stephen, and two teenage children.

INTERMEDIATE FOLK HARP (Full-time Program)

In this folk harp class for Intermediates of any age, those who learn by ear and manuscript, we will focus on hand coordination, relaxed playing, technique review and development, fun with rhythm, accompaniment patterns, improvising and composing, chord structure and relevant music theory.  You will learn some new repertoire and will also have the opportunity to participate in the Introductory Folk Harp sessions as a mentor/demonstrator to those trying the harp for the first time (optional to taking an elective).

INTRODUCTORY FOLK HARP (Part-time Program)

Designed for the absolute beginner without previous harp experience, this course will teach the basics of playing the Celtic harp.  Participants will have one class per day to get the feel of a harp, to learn hand placement, easy songs and improvising in a "Harp Circle style".  Alison will lead the class, while Intermediate students provide individual attention.  Harps will be provided, and class size is limited.
